The girl’s parents urged her to stop chewing on her hair, which apparently resulted in this massive hairball.
Medics who examined the youngster named Niuniu Liang found that the reason that she was always sick after trying to eat was because her digestive system was blocked by hair.
The girl's father Cai Liang, 36, said, "We were always telling her not to chew her hair, but we didn't have any idea that it would end up accumulating her stomach like this. When the doctors pulled it out after an operation it weighed almost 2 kilograms. It's no wonder she couldn't eat anything."
The youngster was being raised by her grandparents in a village near the city of Zhoukou in central China's Henan Province while both of her parents worked out of the area for most of the year.
Her dad raised the alarm when he returned for the Chinese New Year and noticed that his daughter was severely underweight.
"I wanted to make sure she got some good meals but then I realized she was being sick after each meal, and my parents told me it was often a problem," he said. "That's when I took to the hospital where they discovered the foreign body in her stomach, and then identified it as a hairball when it was removed."
Doctors who removed the hairball said the youngster had probably started chewing her hair because she was distressed at not having her parents around, and her father has now taken time off work to look after her as she recovers.
"I am going to see if either myself or my wife can make sure we are around as she is clearly missing her parents," Cai Liang said.
The surgery was successful but Niuniu will remain in hospital for observation for a period of time with her father at her bedside.
